Have You Heard the News?

Plymouth Sound Radio was well-known for the quality of its local news output and broadcast journalists. While listening to some of the highlights of launch day (19/05/75) I found this piece on Carmella McKenzie’s show recorded by the 4-strong news team introducing themselves and the kind of news stories they would be covering (click on the little arrow to listen).

Thanks to a variety of former staff members, we have been able to compile the following news clippings and photos from over the years, with pictures of various news teams, the newsroom and booth, and information on the news they covered. Please let us know if you have memorabilia that we can add to this collection.

You may be interested to note that Malcolm Carroll, Head of News back on launch day, also features in the photo of the news team on Plymouth Hoe, taken around 25 years later. While staff retention never seemed to be a problem for the Plymouth Sound News Team, Malcolm was definitely the longest serving journalist at the station.
